Rep Steve Scalise Shot In The Hip; 5 Wounded In Mass Shooting At Republican Baseball Practice
Republican members of Congress had baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia this morning for the annual charity baseball game, a tradition since 1909.
Gunshots suddenly rang out from somewhere along the third base line wounding House GOP Whip Steve Scalise, an aide and two capitol hill police officers. Scalise was playing second base when he was shot in the hip.
Scalise apparently crawled away from the shooter as others scrambled for cover. They’re now reporting that everyone that was wounded is expected to be O.K.
Scalise is in a leadership role in Congress & it was his Capitol Hill Police security detail that returned fire at the gunman eventually wounding him and stopping the attack. Early reports are that 50 -60 shots were fired including the return fire from Scalise’ security detail. He was the only one with security staff. Without them, the rest of the people on the field were sitting ducks. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., told CNN it was at least ten minutes until shooter was down.
As of 9:50 a.m it is being reported that Scalise is in stable condition and undergoing surgery right now.
***UPDATE*** As of 8:15 p.m. last night Rep. Scalise’ condition was changed to critical. It was reported that the bullet went past his hip into his pelvic region doing additional damage that will require more surgery. He is still expected to recover.
They are describing the shooter as a white male about 5′ 10″ with dark hair, a blue shirt and armed with a rifle.
It’s been reported that Rep Jeff Duncan had to leave practice early for a meeting. As Duncan was heading to his car when a man approached him and asked if the team on the field was Republican’s or Democrat’s. Duncan told the man that they were Republicans and went on his way. Shortly thereafter the gunman opened fire on the baseball practice. It is not clear at this time whether the man who approached Duncan was the same person that shot up the field.
Senator Rand Paul “Nobody would have survived … it would have been a massacre” if not for the Capitol Police
Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.
